  • Each qualifying Red, Green or White Dragon group contributes 1 faan, regardless of seat or round.
  • The house example has a Red Dragon Pung and Concealed Hand: 2 faan, below the default minimum.

What is a dragon Pung?

Three identical Red, Green or White Dragons make a Pung. A legally declared Kong uses four identical tiles and retains the same dragon-group bonus. Open and concealed groups both qualify.

The three dragon types are different tiles: Red–Green–White is not a Chow and cannot be treated as one set.

One faan per group, without double-counting

HKMA and our house rules both award 1 per qualifying dragon group. Unlike winds, dragons do not need to match a seat or round. A pair alone earns no dragon-Pung bonus.

For Little Three Dragons, HKMA adds the two dragon bonuses to its 3-faan pattern; our game already includes them in 5. For Big Three Dragons, HKMA uses 5 + 3, while our game settles an inclusive 8-faan limit.

A dragon pair is not a scoring Pung

Two Red Dragons may be a legal pair, but they are not a 1-faan dragon group. In our game, a dragon pair also prevents All Chows; HKMA’s All Chows pair rule differs, so check that rule separately.

Try 2 faan, then 3

The example has a Red Dragon Pung and three Chows, all concealed. On a discard it scores Dragon Pung 1 + Concealed Hand 1 = 2 under house rules. Switching to self-draw adds 1 and reaches the default 3-faan minimum.

A few things to know

Does a dragon Kong score more than a dragon Pung?

Not for the dragon-group item in our game: either is 1. A Kong-replacement win can earn a separate event bonus only when that replacement actually completes the hand.
