How many faan is self-draw?

Self-draw contributes 1 faan in the HKMA reference and our ordinary house scoring. It means the winning tile was drawn by the winner. It describes how the hand finishes, not a different fourteen-tile shape.

Our game treats a normal draw, a legal winning Kong replacement and the dealer’s initial extra tile as self-draw sources. The full hand and minimum must still be valid; a house limit replaces ordinary self-draw additions.

A complete 3-faan house example

The grouped hand has four Chows and a non-value pair, kept concealed. Under our house rules, All Chows 1 + Concealed Hand 1 + Self-draw 1 = 3, meeting the default minimum.

For 3 final faan, our house payment is 8 points from each opponent, so the winner gains 24. These are the game’s points. The separate half-laak comparison has different payments, and selecting self-draw there does not add the faan a second time.

Check shape, source, then the minimum

First complete the hand. Identify the actual winning tile and whether it came from your own draw. Then select a matching winning circumstance in the hand calculator and read the total after all eligible items and the cap.

The same tile from another player is a discard win

If another player supplies the winning tile in the saved example, Self-draw disappears. All Chows 1 + Concealed Hand 1 leaves 2, below the default 3-faan minimum. Drawing the tile yourself is not optional wording: it changes eligibility.

Kong Draw, Last Draw and limit hands

Our ordinary scoring adds Kong Draw 1 for an immediate winning Kong replacement, or Last Draw 1 for the final normal wall self-draw. Those two sources are different and cannot describe the same draw.

Other compatible ordinary patterns may combine up to our 8-faan cap. HKMA’s Concealed Hand bonus has separate no-flower and no-Kong conditions, so the house example’s concealment bonus must not be assumed for every table.

A few things to know

Does self-draw always make a hand eligible to win?

No. It adds one ordinary faan in our game, but the completed hand must still reach the selected minimum. The Chicken Hand example rises from 0 to 1 on self-draw and remains below 3.

Is robbing an added Kong self-draw?

The winning tile comes from another player, so it is not the ordinary Self-draw condition. Some rules, including the cited HKMA rules, specify separate robbing-Kong bonuses and payment treatment. The hand calculator has no robbing-Kong selector.
