Reference values below follow the Hong Kong Mahjong Association (HKMA) rules. Worked calculator examples use our browser game’s house rules; check the differences before comparing results.
Does Concealed Hand always score 1 faan?
Our house rules award Concealed Hand 1 when you have made no Chow, Pung, open Kong or added Kong. A declared concealed Kong is allowed. This bonus does not depend on enabling flowers or on receiving no flowers.
The cited HKMA rules are different: Concealed Hand is a 1-faan item only under no-flower rules, and any Kong removes it. Receiving no flowers in a flower game is not the same as playing the no-flower ruleset.
Why this house example scores 2 faan
Four concealed Chows and a pair of 5 Bamboo form a complete hand. On a discard win, our rules award All Chows 1 + Concealed Hand 1 = 2. The default 3-faan minimum is therefore not met.
Switching to self-draw adds 1 and reaches 3. Concealment and the source of the winning tile are separate conditions; one does not imply the other.
Review every declared set
For our game, check whether any Chow, Pung, open Kong or added Kong was declared before the win. A concealed Kong is entered in Melds but does not break the house concealment bonus. The same Kong would fail the cited HKMA Concealed Hand condition.
Claiming a Chow breaks concealment
Move the saved 1–2–3 Characters from concealed tiles into an open Chow. The overall shape stays the same, but the house discard-win total falls from 2 to All Chows 1. Turning exposed tiles face down later does not restore Concealed Hand.
Counterexample condition: 1-2-3 Characters was claimed as an exposed Chow.
Combining Concealed Hand with other faan
Our Concealed Hand item may combine with ordinary All Chows, All Pungs, flushes and self-draw when their conditions hold. The 8-faan cap applies afterward. A house limit such as Nine Gates or Thirteen Orphans replaces ordinary concealment bonuses.
When comparing another table, confirm the flower mode and Kong policy before copying our total. Turning off flowers in this calculator only removes flower scoring; it does not switch to a complete HKMA rules engine.

Does winning on a discard break Concealed Hand?
No. Taking the final tile to win is not declaring an exposed set before the win. The hand must still meet the chosen ruleset’s other concealment conditions.
Does a concealed Kong preserve Concealed Hand?
Our house rules preserve it; the cited HKMA no-flower rule does not. State which ruleset you are using before assigning the faan.
