How many faan is All Chows?

All Chows contributes 1 faan in both the Hong Kong Mahjong Association (HKMA) reference and our browser game. Its basic shape is four Chows and a pair, with no Pungs or Kongs. This is the pattern value, not necessarily the final score of the whole hand.

The HKMA reference permits a dragon or wind pair and does not require a two-sided wait. Our game is stricter about the pair: it cannot be a dragon, your seat wind or the round wind. It also allows edge, closed and single-tile waits.

Worked example under our house rules

1-2-3 and 4-5-6 Characters, 1-2-3 Dots, 1-2-3 Bamboo, pair of 5 Bamboo. These are four Chows plus a non-value pair.

With no exposed melds and a discard win, the evaluator scores All Chows 1 + Concealed Hand 1 = 2 fan. Self-draw would add another fan.

Check the shape, then the ruleset

Identify four separate sequences and one pair. A called Chow still counts as a sequence, but removes the Concealed Hand bonus. Then check the pair against your chosen ruleset: the non-value-pair restriction belongs to our game, not the HKMA reference.

Finally add only eligible bonuses. In the example, a discard win gives All Chows 1 + Concealed Hand 1 = 2. At our standard 3-faan minimum it cannot win; changing the winning method to self-draw adds 1 and reaches 3.

Counterexample: a Red Dragon pair

Replace the pair of 5 Bamboo with two Red Dragons. The four-sequence-and-pair shape remains complete. Under our game’s rules it loses All Chows because the pair is a dragon; under the HKMA reference that pair does not disqualify All Chows.

A wind pair is not automatically a value pair. In our game, a wind that is neither your seat wind nor the round wind can still serve as the pair for All Chows.

Combinations and the winning minimum

All Chows can combine with a compatible flush and eligible winning bonuses. It cannot also be All Pungs in the same decomposition. Concealed Hand and flower bonuses must follow the chosen table’s rules; HKMA awards Concealed Hand only in its no-flower rules.

Our game permits compatible ordinary bonuses up to an 8-faan total. For multiple legal decompositions, the calculator chooses the higher final faan, then the higher uncapped total. The calculator example below uses this house ruleset.

A few things to know

Does All Chows require a two-sided wait?

Neither the cited HKMA rules nor our game requires it. Check the completed shape and the applicable pair rule; do not import Japanese Pinfu requirements into this Hong Kong pattern.

Can I claim a Chow and still score All Chows?

Yes. A claimed Chow remains a sequence. It removes Concealed Hand, so recompute the total and winning minimum rather than assuming the hand still has enough faan.
