Start with these ideas
- All four wind types must form sets; the pair may be a numbered tile.
- HKMA lists 10-faan limit scoring; our calculator settles once at 8.
Reference values below follow the Hong Kong Mahjong Association (HKMA) rules. Worked calculator examples use our browser game’s house rules; check the differences before comparing results.
Four wind sets, then a pair
Make a Pung or Kong of each of East, South, West and North, then add a pair. Open sets are allowed. The saved example uses a pair of 5 Dots, so it is Big Four Winds without All Honours.
10-faan reference and 8-faan house limit
HKMA lists Big Four Winds as a 10-faan limit. Street Corner uses 8. The house result does not then add Seat Wind, Round Wind, All Pungs or Concealed Hand.
Changing the pair to a dragon can also satisfy All Honours in our game. The result may list both limit patterns, but the final total is still 8, not 16.
Three wind sets are not Big Four Winds
With three wind sets and the fourth wind as a pair, check Little Four Winds instead, along with the remaining fourth set. A declared non-wind set uses a slot needed for Big Four Winds.
Compare the completed wind hands
Load the Big and Little Four Winds examples in turn. Both return 8 under our house rules, but the required groups differ. Compare the pattern name and grouped diagram rather than using the final faan to identify the hand.

A hand to try
Win: discard · Seat: East · Round: East · Minimum: 3. Declared melds and special draw context are loaded with the hand.
With the saved win method, seat wind and round wind, this example is expected to score 8 final faan under sc_hk13_v1_2. The calculator also shows every contributing pattern and whether the hand reaches the selected minimum.

A few things to know
Must the pair also be a wind?
No. All four wind types are already used as sets. A suited pair, as in the example, or a dragon pair can complete the hand, subject to the four-copy tile limit.
