Start with these ideas

  • Choose guided practice to learn the turn flow; choose standard mode to practise reaching 3 faan.
  • A hint suggests a connection-based discard, not the safest or best move.
  • Review one claim or discard after each hand before starting another.
Street Corner house rules House rules vary. These examples follow the same rules as our browser table.

Who training is for

If you can recognise pairs and sets but still hesitate over drawing, discarding or claims, guided practice puts those skills together against three computer players. If tile names are still unfamiliar, begin with the interactive lessons instead.

Open the practice table, choose Guided practice and leave Hints enabled, then select Start. Loading begins when you start the game. On a phone, select a tile and confirm Discard; when a claim is offered, choose the action or pass.

No account or email is required. A valid unfinished game is saved in this browser when storage is available. Course progress and the current game are separate saves; clearing site data removes them.

How to use the hints without relying on them

Available actions show what you may legally do now. The beginner help panel can suggest an isolated honour or a suited tile with no close connection, explain why, and let you expand “How this suggestion works”. Sometimes it reports no obvious isolated tile.

This panel looks at your own hand’s connections. It does not evaluate every faan plan, rank all possible discards by danger or inspect opponents’ concealed tiles. A suggested tile may still help an opponent. Before following it, check your pair, your scoring route and the visible table.

Try naming your intended discard and one reason before looking at the suggestion. Use the Hints control to turn help off or back on; switching it off does not change the minimum faan.

Training settings

Guided practice uses a 0-faan minimum; standard and four-round modes use 3. All use the browser’s Hong Kong house rules, flowers enabled and an 8-faan cap. Zero minimum allows an otherwise legal 0-, 1- or 2-faan hand to win; it does not add 3 faan or accept an incomplete shape.

The practice table has no turn countdown. Enabling hints is separate from choosing a mode. For a stricter exercise, start a standard hand; turning hints off on the training table still leaves the minimum at 0. Other Hong Kong tables may score the same pattern differently.

Your first practice goal

First hand: focus on the sequence. Draw once, discard once, and after a Chow or Pung discard without another draw. Identify four candidate sets and a possible pair without assigning the same tile to two groups. Winning is not required to practise these steps.

Next hand: before accepting one claim, explain what you will discard and how the claim affects your faan route. After settlement, read the winning patterns and point changes; on a draw, review one decision instead of inventing a winning score.

Move to standard mode once you can follow turns and state a plausible 3-faan route. In this house ruleset, concealed All Chows without other bonuses has 2 on a discard and 3 on self-draw. Use the beginner strategy guide to compare choices, then try four rounds when you want cumulative scores and dealer changes.

A few things to know

Does training use easier tile draws?

No. Training uses the same four-player engine and legal tile information as the other modes. It lowers the minimum to 0 fan and keeps optional hints available; it does not read or rearrange opponents’ concealed tiles.

Can I continue after closing the page?

A valid unfinished game is saved in this browser and can be resumed here. Clearing site data, changing browsers or using the Android app does not carry that save across.

Does turning hints off make it a 3-faan game?

No. Hints and the mode are separate. Start a standard hand to use the 3-faan minimum; guided practice stays at 0 even with hints off.

Is a suggested discard safe?

No. The beginner panel recognises connections in your own hand. It does not know opponents’ hidden waits and does not guarantee the safest or strongest move.
