  • Four Kongs plus a pair use 18 physical tiles but still occupy four sets and one pair.
  • HKMA lists a 10-faan limit. Our game has no separate All Kongs award; this example scores All Pungs 3.

Why does the hand have eighteen tiles?

Each declared Kong uses four physical tiles instead of three, so four Kongs plus a pair total 18. Each Kong still occupies one set. The example contains four open Kongs and a pair of 5 Bamboo.

HKMA limit versus the house calculation

HKMA lists All Kongs as a 10-faan limit. Our Hong Kong game accepts four Kongs as a legal structure but awards no separate All Kongs bonus. Its 8-faan cap does not mean every named rare hand automatically scores 8.

The saved discard-win example scores All Pungs 3. There are no scoring honours, flowers or flush, and the open Kongs prevent Concealed Hand. Other hands must be checked on their own merits.

Enter Kongs as melds, not concealed tiles

Put all four declared Kongs in Melds and leave only the pair in the concealed area. The calculator expects 14 − 3 × 4 = 2 concealed tiles; it does not expect eighteen tiles in that area.

When does Kong Draw add a faan?

Starting from this example, self-draw gives All Pungs 3 + Self-draw 1 = 4. If the winning tile was the immediate Kong replacement, selecting that circumstance adds another 1 for 5. Merely having four Kongs does not prove how the winning tile arrived.

A few things to know

Does each Kong automatically add one faan?

No in our house rules. A qualifying dragon or wind Kong keeps that honour bonus, while Kong Draw depends on the immediate winning draw. Four Kongs alone are not four extra faan.
