  • The dealer is East; the other seat winds are assigned relative to the dealer.
  • A matching wind Pung or Kong earns 1; matching both seat and round earns 2.

How is your seat wind assigned?

Seat wind belongs to your position for the current hand. The dealer is East, followed in turn order by South, West and North. It is not the compass direction in the room or a permanent player label.

To score the bonus, form a Pung or Kong of that wind. A matching pair is not enough; both open and concealed sets can count.

Seat Wind and Round Wind can both count

HKMA and our house rules award 1 for a matching seat-wind group. If your seat wind and the round wind are the same, one matching group earns both items for 2 faan.

The saved house example is East seat in a South round with an East Pung. Seat Wind 1 + Concealed Hand 1 = 2, so the default 3-faan minimum is not met.

Winds, pairs and flowers are separate checks

An East pair does not earn the East seat bonus. Seat flowers are also a different scoring item: they depend on the flower number matching your seat, not on having a wind Pung.

Change the round without changing the tiles

Load the example and change the round from South to East. The same East Pung now scores Seat Wind 1 and Round Wind 1, plus Concealed Hand 1: 3 in total. This isolates the double-wind effect.

A few things to know

Does an East Pung always score?

No. It earns these wind bonuses only when East matches your seat or the current round. When it matches neither, the Pung may help the shape but earns no seat- or round-wind faan.
